Professional Background
John graduated from the University of London with a Second Class (Lower Division) Honours Degree and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 1987. Upon his return to Singapore, John was called to the Singapore Bar in June 1988.
In his earlier years, he worked as a Legal Assistant with M/s Haridass Ho & Partners from June 1988 before leaving to join M/s Lam Kumar Ng & Naidu in 1989 as an Equity Partner. In April 1993, the law firm of M/s Naidu Ng & Partners was formed with John as a founding and Equity Partner.
From 1 April 1998 to 30 June 2002, John practised as a Sole-Proprietor of M/s John Ng & Co. until the formation of John Ng, Bay & Partners in July 2002. He joined AsiaLegal LLC as a Consultant on 1 April 2009.
Commercial Experience
Throughout his career in law, John had on many occasions the conduct of real estate and conveyancing matters, financing work and commercial matters.
He has acted as Solicitor for various financial institutions including the United Overseas Bank Ltd, DBS Bank Ltd, Overseas Union Bank Ltd (as it then was), Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Ltd, Malayan Banking Berhad, Standard Chartered Bank and Hong Leong Finance Limited as Mortgagees in financial and conveyancing matters in Singapore.
With regards to conveyancing matters, the nature of the work involved would include advising the Vendor or the Purchaser on all legal aspects of the sale or purchase of real estate in Singapore. Such work would also include the sub-sale or sub-purchase of properties whether directly from the developers or through an original purchaser.
John’s experience in conveyancing matters extend to private residential properties, commercial properties and government or statutory board properties all over Singapore.
He is also well-versed in leases of residential properties as well as of commercial properties including properties located in commercial hubs, shopping centres, warehouses and light industrial factory.
With regards to financial matters, such work would involve fresh financing or restructuring of existing financial facilities and would include the preparation of mortgages, debentures, assignments and guarantees (individual or corporate) as security for financial facilities granted by financial institutions.
John has also acted for Staco International Finance Limited of Hong Kong as Mortgagee in financial transactions involving ocean-going vessels.
Amongst the other public listed institutional clients for whom he had acted were Hotel Grand Central Limited, Crown Prince Hotel, Amtek Engineering Limited and Jackspeed Corporation Limited and its registered subsidiaries.
John presently sits on the Board of Directors of UCC Ueshima Coffee (S) Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of UCC Ueshima Coffee Co. Ltd of Japan, Meret Productions Pte Ltd and Asia Associated Products Pte Ltd in Singapore, Malaysian Trading Company Sdn Bhd of Johore Bahru, Malaysia and Ban Lian Trading Sdn Bhd of Malacca, Malaysia.
Additionally, John sits as Company Secretary to numerous private limited companies incorporated in Singapore including the Singapore Hotel Association Holdings Pte Ltd and its registered subsidiaries, and as Legal Advisor to the Nanyang Huang Shi Chung Huay in Singapore.
